MAKING WORDS

 

 

AT HOME: Together practise identifying letters and making words using FUN materials:

Use manipulatives to build letter shapes:
Use these materials to construct the actual shapes of the letters.

• Q-tips
• pipe cleaners
• pretzel rods
• chop sticks
• skewers
• toothpicks
• pencils
• pens
• crayons
• string cheese
• blueberries

Draw Letters in:
Use a tray to practice making the letter in the material.

Wet	Dry
fingerpaint or paint shaving cream pudding applesauce any puree or baby food whipped cream icing yogurt	salt flour / cornmeal / dry pancake mix sand leftover coffee grounds (dry)

 Decorate a Printed Letter using:

SPEECH BUBBLES

Students were giving photographs that were taken earlier in the year.  They could choose a photo and write what they were saying or thinking.  Some students choose pictures of their classmates and wrote what they were saying or thinking.

Here are a couple of examples:

I love playing blocks.

I was writing Michael Jordon's body and I looked at the smartboard.

 

When students are writing in class, they are encouraged to sound out the words and use their knowledge of letters sounds.  Also, students are encouraged to use the word wall, words around the room and to ask their peers for help.  The word wall contains many beginning and common words.  

 

 

 

Blowing Bubble Art

Mixture - soap, paint, water

 





Students blow into their own straw and make bubbles.  When the bubble are over top of the glass, they can take their paper to stamp a bubble print.  Some students experimented with putting their paper blow the cup of bubbles, then blowing enough to over flow.

 

 

 

 

Marshmallow Painting

Students used pencil crayons or markers to draw themselves  blowing bubbles.   Then, they used marshmallows to create bubbles floating in the air.

Two students cooperatively created a picture together. 

 

This is what they each said about their work,

Kaylo - "Me and Elijah were blowing bubbles with helmets on, and we used rainbow colours.  And we tried to do words- bubbles and Elijah tried yes."

Elijah - "We were making bubbles, some went over our faces, some are big and some are small and we made football helmets so they didn't get our faces.  Kaylo's is yellow and mine is blue.  And we tried to write words.

Ella was so proud, she ran over to me and said, "Look, the word 'the' !"

A Pirate Ship

 

I asked the students, "Where does a pirate ship sail?"

 

This was their responses,

Lucas said, "Island."  I asked, "What is an island?" He responded, "It's where pirates live!"

Ally said, "Ocean."   I asked, "Can you tell me more about an ocean." She stated, "Well, an ocean has sharks, starfish, seaweed, sea plants, and crabs." She then grabbed the kaleidoscope (below) and said, "I'm looking sharks!"

 

 Blue Slime

Many students created worms, snakes and snails.  They compared sizes of their animals.

Everyday there are always many basketball pictures!!!

 

 

Some recent highlights!!

 

Girls designing and creating dresses, problem solving and working together.  Then, they modelled their dresses on a big block stage.

 

Getting messy!!

Some students created paper mache basketballs, others choose not to.  They said, "It looks to messy!"

 

 

Students have been playing and experimenting with instruments.

 

We use the school Ipads on a regularly.

Many students try to write a sentences with a period at the end!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We had a very busy January.  The students have been taking care of the animals in the Vet Centre creating and sharing puppet shows with our new theatre and have been building structures using a variety of materials.   Thank you for all the donations to our Vet Centre and the various art supplies. 

This month we will be furthering their inquiries, as well as focusing on personal hygiene and exploring money.   The students have requested to change the Vet Centre into a Supermarket.  We are looking for donations of: empty food boxes, cash registers, children grocery carts, money tray, grocery flyers, reusable shopping bags, and old phone books.

Please remember that with the cold weather upon us, children must be dressed warm because we will continue to have outdoor learning twice a day, unless the wind shield is too low.    Windsor weather changes very quickly, please send your child with a warm coat, snow pants, a hat, mittens, and boots every day.  Also, they must have shoes to wear indoors.

Many students have been sick with the flu and colds.  If your child is sick with the flu or flu like symptoms, please do not send them to school.  Sick children don’t have energy to learn, and they infect other students and staff.  

 IMPORTANT DATES

·       February 4^th - Report cards go home. 

·       Thursday, February 7^{th –}Parent-Teacher Conferences Please call the office if you would like to meet with us.

·       February 8^th - PD Day (NO school for students)

·       February 14^th –Valentines’ Day

Wear PINK, RED and WHITE DAY!    Currently, we have 28 students in the class.  If you child would like to send Valentine’s to their peers, feel free to just write  ‘From your child’s name’.   This makes it easier for your child to pass out their Valentines.    

·       February 18^th - Family Day  (NO SCHOOL)

·       February 20^th - Kindergarten Open House for 2013- 2014 Registrations from 4:00pm till 5:30pm

·       February 21^st – 100 Days of School

Students are to bring in a collection of 100 items.

(i.e. pennies, cheerios, pebbles, Lego pieces, ect.)

·       February 22^nd – Community Visitor from the Windsor Humane Society visiting the classroom

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Happy New Year and welcome back! 

December Pajama Day

 

Hope everyone had a safe and fun filled holiday!  We are looking forward, once again, to working and playing together with the students to help them continue to learn and grow.

·        We will be exploring 2D shapes and 3 figures.  Students will identify shapes in in the environment and create figures using various materials. 

·        Some students have showed an interest in basketball.  We will continue to learn more about our favourite players through read-alouds and utilizing the smartboard for research. 

·        Our Dramatic Art Centre has been transformed to an Animal Hospital.  Students will learn how to care for animals and use specialized language that may be heard at a Veterinarians Office.   Donations are always accepted and appreciated, items that we are looking for are clean stuffed animals, doctor tools, bandages, x rays,   Q-tips, new tooth brushes, small blankets, small animal crates. 

REMINDERS:  

 Please remember that with the cold weather upon us, children must be dressed warm because we will continue to have outdoor learning twice a day.  Students need a coat, snow pants, a hat, mittens, and boots.  Please remember that they also must have shoes to wear indoors.

On Friday, January 25^th, we would like to invite all kindergarten students to wear a hat to school for “Kindergarten Crazy Hat” day.

News..

The Dress Shop have been very a huge success.  Students love to wear costumes, hats and high heels while learning.  Thank you for all the donations of clothing and costumes.

This week we made popcorn with Mrs. Kelly's class.  The student's are learning how to retell steps.  We used pictures, best guessed spelling and oral language to retell the steps of making popcorn.  You can practice this at home by retelling how to get ready for school or after reading a book ask your child to retell the main parts in the story.  

Next week:

• Students will continue to learn about patterns.  They are learning to create and extend colour, shape, size and directional patterns.  A favourite read aloud is called Pattern Bugs by Trudy Harris. 
• Students will continue to learn about the importance of healthy eating, and learn about the 5 food groups.  Please remember to send healthy choices in your child's lunch.
• Book orders were due on Friday.  I am extending this till Monday morning-- December 10th.  Last chance to order before the holidays!
